CATARACT OPERATION

Cataracts can cause blurred vision and increase the brightness of the lights. If a cataract makes it difficult for you to perform normal activities, your doctor may suggest cataract surgery.

For example, doctors may recommend cataract surgery if a cataract makes it difficult for the ophthalmologist to examine behind the eye to monitor or treat other eye problems, such as age-related macular degeneration or diabetic retinopathy.

In most cases, waiting for cataract surgery will not affect your eye, so you have time to consider your options.

 PREPARATION FOR CATARACT PROCEDURE

You may be asked not to eat or drink anything 12 hours before cataract surgery. Your doctor may also advise you to temporarily stop taking any medicine that may increase the risk of bleeding during the procedure. Tell your ophthalmologist if you are taking medicines for prostate problems, as some of these medicines may interfere with cataract surgery.

Normally, you can go home on the same day as the operation, but you will not be able to drive. You will also need help for a while, as activities such as bending and lifting may be limited for about a week after surgery.

AFTER CATARACT PROCEDURE

After cataract surgery, expect your vision to start to improve in a few days. This may be blurred at first as the eye heals.

The colours may look brighter after surgery as you look through a new, clear lens. A cataract is usually yellow or brown before surgery, reducing the appearance of colour.

You will usually see your ophthalmologist a day or two after surgery, and then again after about a month to monitor your healing.

It is normal to feel slight itching and discomfort for a few days after surgery. Avoid rubbing or pushing your eye. Your ophthalmologist may ask you to wear an eye patch or a protective shield on the day of surgery.

After a few days, most of the discomfort should go away. Often, complete healing takes place within eight weeks. If you have cataracts in both eyes, your doctor will schedule a second surgery after the first eye has healed.
